Square/Enix rumors abound!

Posted by Jason Triplett

A source inside Square/Enix let slip a few interesting tidbits in a recent official forum post that was quickly deleted. Many things were mentioned, from FF7 to Kingdom Hearts to a new fighting game series.

Let's start with FF7. He stated the remake would not happen for PS3, the tech demo was just that. This is no big surprise, since Square has said that numerous times publicly. However, he did mention FF7 was making some new appearances on consoles. The original game would be available for download via Sony's marketplace in "episodes". These episodes could be transfered to the PSP. He also mentioned that FF7 is being considered for a Nintendo DS port. Square Loves the little handheld that could, and hope to begin work on this port soon.

We aren't done with FF7 just yet... He went on to talk about Square pictures. Apparently a second FF7 film is in the works from Square pictures, with a 2009 target date.

This same topic brought up Kingdom Hearts. Disney is interested in doing a KH film, and has approached Square about doing it. Square Pictures is tied up doing the cutscenes for FFXIII and the new FF7 film, so they declined. However, he reported that Square gave the go ahead to Disney to begin production on the project. Whether Disney's in house animation company or Pixar will make the film is still unclear.

One last thing he talked about was the blending of properties. Since the Square/Enix merge, they have talked about merging FF with the DW/DQ series. Well according to the source, they are doing just that, but in a fighting game series to hit all consoles and both 3D handhelds. The series would feature key characters from most FF games and some characters from the Dragon Warrior series as well. No word on any other SE characters making an appearance, nor when this game would even be available.

I would like to note that Rated-M could not independantly confirm any of this, but it sure seems like hot info, especially since Square removed the post within an hour of it being posted. We will get more info on this story to you as it breaks!

GRAW 360 gets new content!

GRAW Chapter 2 is out now on the XBL marketplace. There is a crap load of content included, like 4 new maps, some old maps with new tim of day, five new weapons, and more camo and soldier skins.

The pack costs a whopping 1200 points, or $15 in real money, making it the most expensive single download since the pay for content thing started way back on the first XB. If you are a fan of GRAW, and have $15 to spend and almost 1GB free on your hard drive, then this is for you!

Who is Iron Man?

Posted by Jason Triplett

Variety reports that Marvel has set a May 2nd, 2008 release for their upcoming film Iron Man, to be directed by Jon Favreau. However, no one has any idea as to who is going to play the hero. The forums at imdb.com are on fire with speculation, but at this point, not even the director or writers have any clue as to who is going to be Tony Stark.

360 gets the shaft on Prey demo, 3D Realms speaks!

Posted by Jason Triplett

In a shocking (not really that shocking) turn of events, 360 owners eager to play tonight's release of the long awaited Prey demo logged into XBL to find...nothing. The demo was a no show. Forums across the net are on FIRE behind this.

Well 3D Realms felt they had to speak on this matter, addressing it in their official forums. George Broussard had this to say:

"We do not want 360 people waiting up for the demo or having false expectations. The 360 demo will not appear on Marketplace tonight.I'm still waiting for specifcs, but I'm being told that it's still in testing at Microsoft. From what I understand this isn't Microsoft's fault, and is more likely just an issue of timing.I'm hesitant to give any estimates for a release, but I've been told it should be reasonably soon after the pc release, but could be as long as a few days.We will post an update as soon as we have more solid information."

He went on to say:

"It's not Microsoft's fault. They aren't gay. Really."

I lol'd at that last part a dozen times now...

Anyways, for tthe entire thread, and further correspondance from Mr. Broussard himself, check the link below.

MP3.com back to supporting indie artists!

Posted by Jason Triplett

It has been awhile since the meteoric fall of MP3.com, one of my picks for website of the decade...hell century. MP3.com got raped by the music industry for posting music downloads, and while the artists who had actually already made it big were happy, thousands of indies hoping for their shot at stardom were screwed.

MP3.com was once the hub for indie music, launching careers based on popularity. Drowning Pool for example, was an MP3.com member before their big break, and they attribute their Mp3.com fanbase to their eventual success. The power of the people is what can make or break an artist...and that forum was gone...but not forever.

MP3.com is currently Beta Testing their new personal artist page program, in which any average Joe with half a lick of talent (or none at all) can post their work for the world to see and vote on. MP3.com is on it's way back...it took forever, but it seems tht this site isn't going anywhere anytime soon!

Busta Rhymes kicks the Dixie Chicks' asses!

The numbers are in. Fans of rap or people who just hate country, rejoice! Busta Rhymes' new album "The Big Bang" has dethroned the bitch trio, taking his first ever number one debut spot. The previous number one holders, Dixie Chick (heartwarmingly referred to around my town as "Chicks with Dicks"), were also dethroned by the new AFI album, though AFI didn't have the staying power to hold the number one spot.

The Dixie Chicks still hold the number two spot, and are still number one on the country charts.

Nintendo Wii to launch October 2nd?

Posted by Jason Triplett

Recently, GameStop added Wii games into their system with release dates. One date pops up quite a few times throughout, Oct. 2nd.

A few days later, GameStop moved several key titles from the 360 list to the same date. Some of the titles are Forza 2, Viva Pinata, and Gears of War. These games had previously been placed against the PS3 launch. Microsoft stated during and after E3 that they weren't intimidated by the PS3's launch line-up, but were quick to complement Nintendo.

Speculation is that Microsoft moved their big fall titles up to face the Wii launch, showing that they aren't concerned a bit with Sony's launch. If this is true, this would place the Wii release date on October 2nd, 2006. Rated-M is keeping tabs on this story and we will post more as it develops.

Star Wars Galaxies turns 3!

Posted by Jason Triplett

Sony is celebrating 3 years of service in their once popular MMO Star Wars Galaxies. During the celebration, all players will receive an instant travel ship for each character on their account. Veteran players will also receive more house storage space.

Also during the celebration, numerous player and GM run events will be going on across all servers. One of these events actually sounds cool:

"Party with Max Rebo and His Band!

Come celebrate the 3rd Anniversary of Star Wars Galaxies with Max Rebo and special guests on the roof of the Lucky Despot Cantina in Mos Eisley!

Max and his band will be performing continuously from Thursday June 22nd through Wednesday June 28th, so stop by any time to see the most famous band in the galaxy! Big crowds are expected during the peak hours of 6 to 10pm PST (GMT for European servers), so plan accordingly."

Unfortunately, the servers are still empty in contrast to the past, and the only thing that will bring the people back is pre-cu servers. SOE stands by their claim that the game is fine, and will never bring back pre-cu servers.

For more info on the celebrations, check out the official website http://starwarsgalaxies.station.sony.com/

Acclaim reborn or doomed to fail?

Posted by Jason Triplett

Acclaim Games, formally disbanded and out of business, was reborn recently when the company was purchased by an aspiring new team. Once holding such liscenses as WWE Wrestling and Turok, Acclaim now focuses on free online games.

One game, BOTS, allows you to create your own robot and fight it against other players' creations online. Their other major project, 9Dragons is a localization of an asian free MMO. One could wonder how localizing free MMO's to the states and Euro crowd could be lucrative by any means. I guess we will just have to wait and see what the future holds for Acclaim. One thing is for sure, I am very happy to see the company back.
